Four Engaging Springtime Activities For Your Pet
Spring has arrived! After being stuck inside for months, we’ve reached the days when you can step outside to see flowers blooming and feel the warmth in the air.
If you’re a pet owner, chances are that your fur babies are eager to head outside for some engaging playtime regardless of the weather. The difference between Winter and Spring is that now you’re likely looking forward to spending time outside, too!
Why Is Engagement Important For Your Pet?
Consciously involving your dog or cat in engaging activities has numerous benefits. Dr. Spangler will tell you that keeping your pets’ minds and bodies active is vital not only to their physical health but also to their overall happiness! Regular exercise may also help prevent health complications later in their lives.
Many dogs and cats instinctively want to be occupied with a task, goal, or something entertaining. Time spent outside is valuable for combating boredom, depression, and anxiety.
Regardless of your pet’s age or fitness, you don’t have to look far for ways to enrich its life this spring!
Hiking
Our veterinarian office is fortunate to have Southwest Virginia as its home, and with that comes many beautiful places to hike. Whether your pet is youthful and active or needs activities of less intensity, there is a trail nearby right for them. The many sights, sounds, and smells will healthily stimulate their senses!
A Spring Day at the Park
If there was ever a sign that it’s Springtime, it’s parks abounding with people and pets! Parks provide a feeling of liveliness and a welcome change of scenery. Some pets enjoy socializing and taking in their surroundings. Thankfully, there is no shortage of beautiful, spacious parks in the Troutville, Blue Ridge, and Roanoke areas.
For dog parents, in particular, dog parks serve as a solid setting to let out pent-up energy. While not always the best choice for dogs not acclimated to socializing, it may benefit younger dogs learning to interact! Just think of all the cute or amusing moments you’ll see!
Agility Courses
This activity requires more setup and training but can be rewarding. Agility training involves leading your pet through various obstacles as you give commands. A course typically consists of weave poles, tire jumps, tunnels, seesaws, pause tables, and A-frames.
You can find agility starter kits for sale (Outward Hound Outdoor Dog Agility Kit | Petco) or construct the course elements out of lumber and PVC pipe.
Though often associated with dogs, cats are very trainable, too! Guiding your pet through the ups, downs, twists, and turns is quite exhilarating and presents a challenge they’ll enjoy!
Bird/ Animal Watching
Perhaps your dog or cat would be better suited for a more leisurely yet engaging activity. Setting up a window display for them to watch nature’s passers-by, like birds and squirrels, is just the thing! Just set up a few feeders and a comfy place for you and your pet to view the show!
Talk To Your Vet!
It’s essential to keep your pet active and occupied, enriching their lives whenever possible. The Spring months are a perfect time to start a new routine.
Of course, pets have different needs, abilities, and limitations. Be sure to schedule regular checkups (Vet Clinic in Troutville & Roanoke, VA | Animal Hospital (olddominionveterinaryclinic.com)) with your veterinarian and consult them about a physical activity plan catered to your pet!
